Flax – Shit in Space
April 2018I’ve been asked by Bacon, a Production company based in Oslo, to take part in this little gem of a film for Flax, the Norwegian Lottery. My job was to upgrade a old model of the MIR that they bought on Turbosquid and transform it into a modern looking spaceship, similar to the ISS, International Space Station. The model itself didn’t require much work, but the textures required a complete rework. I took care of the UV, changing from 2 UDIMs to 46, dividing each UDIM by material where possible. Then I took care of the textures in Substance Painter. Time constraint were very short, so I had to finish the whole ship in 8/10 days. The exterior shots are full CG, while all the interiors are real set. Rendered by Bacon in Redshift.
After the film was released I spent some time playing around with Marmoset Toolbag 3, to test a heavy asset (1.4 million polygons and 46 UDIMs x5 maps) and see if I could emulate Redshift in real-time. I’ve to admit I was blown away by the quality I could easily achieve in Marmoset. A part from the background plate and some minor color correction these are plain renders!
